'Consuming impulse' was released in 1989. That fact alone is simlpy startling considering how little metal has changed since then. More amazing still is that this album, remixed and touched up with some atmospheric production would certainly be well recieved today. Pestilence are essentially a mix of early death metal, thrash and a little black metal. They occasionally incorporate keyboards into their songs but in the main their music is very much based on thrash-style metal guitar riffs. The intensity of the music is fierce at all times with the vocals sounding similar to those of Death but with a little more ferocity. Much has been made of the technical dexterity in their musicianship and, while it is impressive, it's not going to shock anyone nowadays (except Metallica and Nu metal fans!). Some negative aspects of the albums are the laughable cover art and lamentable use of what sound to me like single coil pickups on the guitars. Also, check out some of the hilarious drum rolls on these albums down the high pitched toms, what a shame! The occasional cringing moment soon passes though to leave fine songs , solid musicianship and decent atmosphere. Any fan of extreme metal should strongly consider purchasing this fantastic duo of fine albums. It is not a case that they are simply 'good for their age' but rather they are good for any age!
