5.0 out of 5 stars unique and at times exquisitely beautiful, 17 Feb. 2013

This review is from: Original Album Series (Audio CD)
This is a collection of the first and best five of the incredible string band albums. they are definately an acquired taste but i have always loved them since being introduced to them one mushroom influenced sunday as a 17 year old, 24 years ago. now as a mature and relatively sensible adult (sort of) i still love them and play them alot. They for me epitomise the late 60's summer of love period experimental folk/ world music scene. the music is experimental with many unusual instruments -at its worst its a bit over whimsical but still listenable but at its best it's absolutely transcendental equisite beauty is moving. this collection of five albums is also very good value for money. i love it and recommend it highly.

You say that you listened to them as a seventeen year old, twenty four years ago; and that for you they epitomised the sixties. But the sixties were fifty plus years ago. You are only forty one or forty two. You were not born until the mid seventies so how can this be? What you mean is that they appear to epitomise the 'summer of love' that of which you were told about. It was a myth. The music here, far from being over whimsical and transcendental, it was a very down to earth release from the continual threats of having nuclear bombs dropped on your head while you were in school. This is what really epitomised the sixties for those of us who were there; and the seventies.
