I honestly never knew that reading about wine would be so interesting, diverse or simply fascinating. Across the 400 pages of this book, split neatly into countries/regions around the world, there are details of literally thousands of different wine types produced around the globe.
This book feels like a lifetime's work from two passionate wine lovers. Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson are phenomenally knowledgeable and have between them produced a volume which is interesting, informative and educational. I now find myself opening up the book to read about a wine when I open a new bottle, to discover about the region, the grapes used and history of the region/vineyard.
The pictures alone which are displayed throughout this book are lovely in themselves. Plus, there are maps galore showing wine regions, pictures of wine labels, people, vineyards (there's an amazing picture of the Chianti hills in Italy on p.172 for starters!).
I'd thoroughly recommend this book to any wine lover, they'll be sure to thank you for it. That's if you can ever allow yourself to give it away in the first place!
