Customer Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful book., 30 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Pro Linq: Language Integrated Query in C# 2010 (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Paperback)
I had an informative exchange with the book's author, Joe Rattz, when he was still writing the first edition way back in 2006/2007 sometime. He was very helpful getting me started with Linq and pointing me to online resources to see me through until the first books on Linq started to hit the shelves. What I appreciated back then was Joe's enthusiasm for the subject and the support the publishers, apress, were giving him. Needless to say I pre-ordered the book while Joe finished it off. And so the book sat on my shelf, taken down once a while and put back to gather dust. Last night (29th Nov 2013) I was restless with a problem I was trying to solve and it was getting late. I took the book down in desperation and flicked through the pages. Suddenly, I found a code sample that pretty well did everything I needed to do. Some 30 minutes later I'd fixed my vexing coding problem.

Yes, I may well have found a solution elsewhere but it's testimony to a book that while only occasionally referenced it continues to add value for me. True, the layout of the book is clumsy but that's not Joe's fault, it's just the awful quality of the paper and the type face used, something which apress clearly fail to recognise and modernise. I don't know what it is, but apress books look ugly. Thankfully the content of Joe's book is not. Mine has but 580 pages but it seems the new edition has over 800. What's changed since mine was printed I don't know but I suspect Linq hasn't changed much over the years perhaps. Whatver the reason, Joe came across as a really decent guy to do business with and he knows his subject and presents it nicely. I recommend his book. I may only use mine once in a while but I'm glad I have it.
