A good read and full of interesting insights into the trials and tribulations on board the vast carriers of the ocean. Not quite sure why the author got quite so hung up on the whales (and I never tire of seeing dolphins, whales and all sea life on my travels), perhaps another book dedicated to that subject would have been a better ploy rather than spending an entire chapter of a book which is meant to be about shipping. Still, it is an important matter ... I just feel it was overstated on this occasion.
That said, one of the most striking things for me was the authors mention of the lack of response to those in distress. I witnessed this myself just last year as the only vessel (a yacht) to respond to a mayday and, without proper resuscitation equipment available we lost the casualty after an hour of CPR. Were we miles from other aid? No. We were in Gibraltar bay, surrounded by ships, pilots, ferries, etc ... all, probably, with defibs these days ... no-one came to help. MAIB enquiry results? There wasn't one.
Anyway, I digress. A good read, informative and well written.
