Customer Review

on 7 June 2004
this is just how I like my indie/rock albums to be; long, chunky, varied, well made, and engaging from start to finish. the amount of time and effort put into making this record is obvious. there are an array of instruments used in this debut for Elbow but with a core of guitars, drums and a piano. most of the songs are melodic and gentle but often rise to something quite grandious. I really like the way the piano is used on this album. none of the songs are heavy in nature, with a possible exception of Coming Second - described by lead singer Guy Garvey as "wicked" . indeed this is my favourite song on the album, for its simplicity and huge drum beat which stays in your head for months, yes months. I first heard this band live and couldn't get the sounds of Coming Second out of my head for three months until finally buying the album. Elbow deserve all the credit they get for this work.
