A classic British metal album,

This review is from: Surgical Steel - Includes Bonus Track (Audio CD)
After a long absence - Carcass return - with Jeff's satirical, biting, lyrical wit, Bill's scalpel sharp precision riffage, and a new drummer to pay homage to Ken's blistering legacy, all intact, and it almost sounds as if they'd never been away.
There's a spread of different Carcass eras on display here - from the brutal bludgeoning of the early songs (although without the dirty sludge production of the first release - which I still love.) To the more delicate, calculated savagery of their heady Heartwork days.
Without wanting to label an already extensive list of genres and sub genres, what we have here is a really good heavy metal album. At the end of the day, that's what this is, and it has all the hallmarks of a classic; the atmospheric intro track 1985, the fast songs, the mid paced rockers, the epic closing track - it's a polished, high quality set of songs, that is pure class start to finish.
I'm really glad they went ahead with this after their very successful festival appearances - as much as I love Bill's Firebird and Jeff's fantastic country album - when combined they make outstanding tracks.
It's an essential purchase for any rock or metal fan. And I hope they continue to release new material - as my other fave bands - Van Der Graaf Generator and Voivod have done.
