I really enjoyed this story. I hadn't read any of Kathryne Kennedy's books before, but the world she created drew me in straight away. The Elves here have come through a gateway from Elfhame because they grew bored of peace, so have taken over England and divided it into kingdoms. Far from the ethereal and friendly Elves of Tolkien's worlds, the Elves from Eflhame are much colder creatures, but it seems their half-human offspring are too 'human' for their likes. The Fire Lord thinks his half-elven son, general Dominic Raikes, possesses more magical abilities than he's letting on (which would make him a threat), and over the years subjects him to trials by magical fire. Because of his father's cold nature, and will to destroy anything he takes an interest in, Dominic has to pretend his new bride (through an arranged marriage) means nothing to him, even though she awakes all-too human feelings in him. I loved this tale, and hope Kennedy makes a series of it, I'd love to read more about the other kingdoms and their Lords and offspring.
