This review is from: Dallas Buyers Club [DVD] (DVD)
I didn't think that "Dallas Buyers Club" lived up to all its hype and I failed to see why it has received so many Oscar nominations. It is a film all about AIDS victims in the 1980's and I found the subject matter of the film to be quite depressing. Matthew McConaughey plays a homophobic , redneck, womanising , drug taking and boozing electrician who is into rodeo. His pals all desert him when he contracts HIV and is given only a month to live. He is driven out of his job and home and nearly dies after overdosing on an experimental drug being trialled on AIDS victims. He befriends a transsexual drug addict and he then starts up a business selling unapproved drugs obtained from Mexico which has helped to alleviate his AIDS related symptoms and prolonged his life - the Dallas Buyers Club. However he encounters resistance to his enterprise from the FDA, the police and leading medical figures. The acting is very good, but it wasnt really my sort of film. The "LGBT" community will probably love this film however.

I think the subject is depressing too, but I am not part of the "LGBT" community, this film is not about that community, it is about the inability of people who really needed the drugs for their illness to get access to them. It is about people desperate to stay alive to have access to drugs which will keep them alive. I am a married mother in Norfolk and I can sympathise with the plight of people who just don't want to die. Its got nothing to do with being part of the "LGBT" community!
