This review is from: Unbreakable (2 Disc Collectors Edition) [DVD] (DVD)
I too enjoyed Unbreakable more than the Sixth Sense, not that there's much wrong with either. I'm also rather pleased that the director has risked the wrath of teenage moviegoers with the attention span of a butterfly - all the more to enjoy for the rest of us!
Shyamalan sucks the viewer into a hugely detailed world, where the significance of each shot must be weighed up carefully and interpreted - his skill being to encourage you to view events from one perspective and overlook the obvious truth and reality. As with the Sixth Sense, the beauty, logic and simplicity of the final twist catches you by surprise.
Very satisfying - but there is far more than just the twist. Like a diamond, this film reveals many facets without ever giving up all its secrets. View Bruce Willis's initial denial, then gradually coming to terms with his supernatural gift, and eventually using it as a force for good, to the joy of his son. Magnificently done. Willis and especially Samuel L Jackson are utterly credible and watchable throughout.
There are flaws in this particular diamond, of course. The script does grind to nothing at some points, and the pace of direction could undoubtedly be increased, but don't let that detract from your overall enjoyment of a splended piece of cinema.
