This is a very engaging introduction to Borneo - Sabah province - as it was under the control of the British North Borneo company before WWII. Agnes Keith, the author, went there to join her husband who was an important official of the company. She found the rather stilted colonial society a bit of a shock - she was American. The descriptions of the flora, fauna and local people bring the book to life and her account of a mjor trek through the jungle is amazing and horrifying - especially if you've ever expereinced leeches! Her following book, 'Three Came Home' is also worth a read - a compelling account of her internment by the Japanese.
