A MUSIC CLUB VERBAL REVIEW MADE WRITTEN FOR AMAZON,
This review is from: Songs Of Love And Hate (Audio CD)
We did this album at a recent monthly music club event I attended in Cardiff and I thought I'd turn my verbal utterances into written form for you, dear reader.
Prior to being made by the club to listen carefully to Songs of Love and Hate (is there a better album title?) I had never really got into this album. I thought it paled in comparison to the only other LC album I own, his debut, which I consider one of the great debuts in history. I also own that brilliant compilation, 'The Essential Leonard Cohen' and I have heard enough to consider this artist a genius. So I'm not that surprised that further listens made me reevaluate this album and I feel enriched as a result.
The tone of 'Songs of Love and Hate' is darker, both musically and lyrically than anything he did before. From the brilliant opening track, Avalanche, right through to the closing track, Joan of Arc, which tells the tale from the point of view of the fire engulfing her, the tone never lets up and is all the more interesting and rewarding as a result. Whilst I still prefer his debut, I have grown to like this album a lot and am going to give it the equivalent star rating to the 8 out of 10 I gave it in the music club.
