A Review From Someone With No Creativity
, 14 Jan. 2014
This review is from: Minecraft (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
I'm never one to let a bandwagon go by without jumping on, so when I read about the millions of copies sold of `Minecraft: 360 Edition' I thought it must be something worth checking out. `Minecraft' is simply a phenomenon, a huge success that stretches from PC gamers to kids on console (just ask my niece). However, after booting up the game and playing it for a few hours I have to simply say - eh, what is all the fuss?
`Minecraft' is a world building game. You must mine your surroundings and mix resources to create fire, buildings etc. After a while a wider game opens, the daylight hours pass in relative safety, but once the dark comes you must avoid being killed. This is a game that is simple to play, but hard to master. You are offered the world on a stick, but what are you meant to do? I am an old fashioned gamer who likes narrative and an objective to see me through to the next part of the game, `Minecraft' offers little of this. It is open for you to do as you wish, allow your imagination to run free. I have little imagination and hardly any creativity.
I prefer my games to be made by the developers; let them worry about creating building assets etc. If I wanted to build a game, I would get a job for a developer or buy a programme. `Minecraft 360' is simply not my cup of tea. I like the retro style graphics, but not the retro style floaty controls. The interface also felt very PC-centric to me; all inventories and sub-inventories. I gave up on PC gaming decades ago because it was all a little intense in terms of inventories. To have sold so many copies and be as popular as it is, `Minecraft' must be great fun for some people. I know my niece loves it - like a virtual sandpit she can play with her friends. I however will stick to more traditional gaming for now and hope that the future is not one made up of game reliant on making up your own fun. I pay my money so someone can do the inventing for me.
