This review is from: Knowing/District 9/Moon [DVD] (DVD)
I think for anybody who missed out on watching these three featured films in the cinemas, back when they were released, this box set is the best way to be able to "catch up" and, at the same time, save a lot of money. Three films for this price is amazing and what's more, these movies are indeed worth watching at least once.

KNOWING is a mystery thriller that starts off as a numerology horror-film, but then changes genre to an apocalyptic end of the world-type movie (think Deep Impact, 2012). Having Nick Cage playing the lead role may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the film still has a very intriguing end and gives you a lot to think about.

MOON is first and foremost, an indie movie that was filmed with a budget of $5 million. This is incredibly, incredibly low - the sort of budget for amateur c-movie productions, not even b-movies. But this is exactly why Moon is so unforgettable. Despite this low budget, the movie looks and feels amazing. The scenes on the surface of the moon, and also inside the lunar base are absolutely stunning. Furthermore, this movie deals with the concepts of long distance relationships, isolation, and corporate greed that breaches ethical codes of conduct. Worth watching! The Moon DVD also comes bundled with some making of footage, which you usually do not find in such low price multi-movie box sets.

DISTRICT 9. A very gritty film. Think Blood Diamond and Black Hawk Down, but with much more hectic camera movement and documentary style footage thrown in. This film has lots of gore, and a very rushed beginning, but then grows on you as you begin to identify with the lead characters and basically follow them right on their heels through several near-suicide missions. District 9 also dwells on racial and xenophobic issues, and features some odd humour, too. Ultimately though, it leaves you wondering: what if a scenario like this would really happen? An alien ship stranded on Earth, its inhabitants seeking refuge, unable to return home? Would we grant them permanent stay, or would we slaughter them, for fear of future inter-species conflicts? Very thought provoking indeed, however, worth watching only for real sci-fi fans.
