Neither us had high hopes for this but were pleasantly surprised by a very decent film that paid homage to the excellent originals. It’s a bit of a road (ok, ocean) trip that flits between Japan, Hawaii and Vegas with the good guy Godzilla literally resurfacing to fight off badass killer monsters eager to spawn and take over the world. There is a decent enough plot concerning the destruction of the Janjira nuclear plant which Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) obsessively researches a decade on in an attempt to discover its unnatural cause that lead to the death of his wife.
The director did a good job here in balancing story and action – when the two big guns first meet head to head we don’t actually see it live but on a TV news channel in the background. A clever touch that kept you eager for more and when it did finally did arrive, the action and cinematography were just immense. In a year of so-so releases this one stands out from the crowd and if you haven’t already, get yourself down to your local cinema for this but don’t forget those 3D specs!
