The editor has compiled these letters wisely, and the effect is a detailed and unusual insight into a complex man's life and career. I have to admit that I liked him a little less after reading through this - he seemed a snob and a bit mean-minded whilst expecting understanding and support from everyone - but I certainly remained as interested in him as ever. We see him at high and low points, sometimes aloof and sometimes needy, and we see through his eyes some of the colour and detail that informed the great era in which he worked.
