I'm really surprised of the amount of 5 star reviews for this show, but maybe that is down to the kind of fan-base that Ricky Gervais has managed to acquire nowadays.
'Derek' continues the decline that started with the rather enjoyable 'Extras'. Here we have the once hilarious Ricky Gervais delivering more of the same tired "mockumentary" style comedy which has now become his trade mark.
One of the most off putting things about this show (other than the constant use of Coldplay's music) is the over-sentimentality that permeates every episode. In fact the show can go a good five or ten minutes without any attempt at somekind of humour. It would seem that Ricky would prefer to give us a five minute musical montage of old people dancing, than trying to make his audience laugh. Perhaps Ricky thinks this over-sentimentality will raise 'Derek' above other sitcoms. Sadly, it doesn't.
Is it me, or has the character of Derek changed from the one in the pilot? I remember his character being more...amusing. The only redeeming performance is that of Karl Pilkington, who has been funnier than Ricky for quite a few years now.
Also, it seems that Stephen Merchant has jumped ship, and he may have taken all the best lines with him.
