The box set itself isn't fantastic; although beautifully packaged, the lack of extras (what gives, HBO?) lets it down somewhat. But my God, what a show. Deadwood is the best TV series I've ever seen, and I'm including The Sopranos. And as a 24 year old highlight-haired mum, I'm not really the kind of person you'd suspect to be a rabid fan. But foaming at the mouth I am! The wordsmithery is utterly gobsmacking, the recreation of the era beautifully realised, the characters evocative and often lovable (the trio of Wild Bill, Jane and Charlie being a wonderful example). And as for the acting? Wow. Ian McShane is a revelation. Whoever said the dialogue is stilted must be out of their mind! So worth a watch, even if, like me, the idea of westerns make you roll your eyes. As long as you have a thick skin and a strong stomach, you won't be disappointed.
