Customer Review

on 5 November 2012
Lots of reviews either raving or ranting about the new Windows. I've had it installed for a few days now & after the initial "Where the hell are my files?" I'm starting to like it. A few things to note on the downside, windows installs a lot of generic drivers for your hardware, some of them work really well but others not so great. It also makes it pretty difficult to overwrite with a proper driver as Windows thinks the one it has selected is the best & tells you so with a little popup. If you have a fast internet connection using a wireless N adaptor you'll likely see a huge drop in speed with the default windows driver. A bit of a fiddle in device manager & I managed to install all the correct drivers & everything is now as it was in Windows 7 with some nice extra features. If you use Facebook, LinkedIn etc then the People App is a winner. I've also found a great Youtube App which does cost £2.19 but literally brings every feature of the website to your desktop. Gaming wise, Nvidia say the current drivers are Windows 8 Certified but my graphics performance is worse. I haven't done any bench marks but games seem to stutter where they never used to & WEI which now goes upto 9.9 only gives my 2 x GTX570 a 7.2. They scored 7.9 in windows 7. I'm pretty sure thats a driver issue to be fixed in due course & WEI has never been an accurate benchmark. The Video & music players are a bit lame & only play Divx & other compressed formats. Audio is the same only picking up MP3 & WAV (WAV is good quality) but no FLAC. Behind the new Start screen VLC & Foobar etc run just fine. Everything that was in windows 7 is still here & pretty much in the same place it always was. The search is even better than 7 so if you are stuck finding something use it!

All in all I like it & you will too if you give it a proper chance, remember it's brand new so driver issues will occur for a while.
