All sorts and more,
This review is from: Welcome To Rosie Hopkins' Sweetshop Of Dreams (Kindle Edition)
London girl Rosie Hopkins is stuck in a relationship that is going nowhere. It seems that her partner Gerard is happy with how things are and his motto seems to be ‘if it ain’t broken, don’t mend it’. There’s not going to be an earth shatteringly romantic proposal or a happy ever after for Rosie, it would seem, just more of the same boring life, stretching ahead. When she is asked to go up to Deepest Derbyshire to help out an elderly relative for a few months she reluctantly agrees. What is it they say? Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Maybe this would be the spur that Gerard needed, and when he was without her, maybe he would realise how much he needed and wanted her.
She remembered Aunt Lily from her childhood because she owned the most glorious and traditional sweet shop you could imagine, but it was in a very small town buried deep within the countryside. Rosie had always admired her aunt. She was glamorous, fiercely independent and never talked about ‘the old days’. Lilian Hopkins had made her little village sweetshop into her life’s work. But when Rosie arrived at Aunt Lil’s little cottage she could not believe her eyes. The shop was almost derelict and her aunt is really out of sorts.
Rosie sets about cleaning the sweetshop and restoring it to its former majesty. She joins in village events and even helps out the young GP as an assistant for some of his more awkward patients. She worked as an auxiliary nurse back in London and her skills were welcomed. Gradually she became used to village life and made friends. She aimed to sort out a place in an old folks home for her aunt and put the shop on the market, although the longer she worked in the business the less she wanted a sale to go through. And the longer Rosie and Lilian spend together, the more they realise they can learn from each other...
This is a light and enjoyable novel with lots of amusing, wise, eccentric and friendly characters. The old-fashioned sweet recipes sound enticing, as though they are crying out to be made. Rosie really fits in well, but she has some important decisions to make; life-changing decisions. With the help and wisdom of her dear aunt, family secrets are revealed, secrets that clearly show Rosie the path she should take in life.
