This review is from: Sargent Watercolours (Watson-Guptill famous artists) (Paperback)
As great a portraitist as he was, Sargent reveals the real artist in his watercolours - the spontaneity and masterful use of colour and white paper show the great technician that he was. The plates graphically convey the freedom that he obviously couldn't give full rein to when portraying his society subjects - like one of the rigidly corseted society beauties he was so famous for suddenly casting off her stays and dancing with wild abandon! A lovely book to have to hand when you want to take a break from this workaday world and dream.
