This review is from: Harponium (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Catriona's work for the last 3 or 4 years, both solo and with Chris Stout and Fiddler's Bid, so a new release is something to look forward to.
This is the best so far in every aspect.
I was captured from the opening Kronos Reel, and the entire body of work only enhanced the initial reaction.
What I initially noticed was the expansion of technique, in the mutings, the slurs, the use of modern stylings far outside usual clarsach. The use of funk timings, backbeats and octave strumming added to sundry buzzes impress in particular, whilst still retaining the clarity and precision of Catriona's folk stylings. The addition of the harmonium adds a background colouring that augments yet does not detract in any way, giving her a canvas to excel on with every track.
She's thrown out restrictions, embraced music as a whole, and will take whatever she feeld she needs from any genre, marrying it all to form an original, dizzying whole.
There can be few musicians of this calibre doing such original work today, with accessibility and entertainment being additional strengths.
I just wonder how she can possibly improve on this...and I can't wait to see where she goes in future.
Just buy the bloody CD. You'll never regret it.
