Cecilia Bartoli's brilliant performance on this CD vastly outshines the maximum of five stars that I'm able to award her; and what a superbly sympathetic accompanist she has in James Levine! Ms Bartoli has to be one of the greatest mezzo-soprano voices of all time.
It's impossible to pick out any particular track because they're all equally excellent. I'm sure if Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini were still alive they would all be thrilled to bits with this wonderful voice and the way it renders their songs.
Ms Bertoli's beautiful voice gives the lie to all this nonsense about 'pop' and 'classical' music. In the real world there's no such thing as 'pop' and 'classical'. As with everything else there's just good music, mediocre music and bad music, all of which, of course, includes singing, and this disc isn't just good; it's brilliant. There really isn't much more that one can say except: 'If you love good music, buy it! You will not be disappointed.'
