A strong start to the series,
This review is from: Doctor Who - Series 4, Volume 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Finally the excruciatingly annoying Martha Jones has been dumped! Halleluja. At last, that apalling drag has been dumped. Now at last comes an assistant who can do more than just stand around pouting and occasionally saying something such as 'Oh my!' In her place is Donna, from 'The runaway Bride.' I was thrilled at her return, she is simply too much fun not to become a full time companion. She was at first at risk of continuing being the hyperactive extreme character of Christmas 2006, which, though fun at the time, would have soon grown tiresome, as she shouted on, however she is now more cheerful and pleasant, finally giving us an assistant with no sad brooding or suchlike.
Anyway, episodes. Episode 1 is rather anticlimatic. Oh the cast and CGI are great, but the script is simply as hollow as an easter egg. Basically, a nasty lady sells people pills which makes their fat come to life, giggle and walk off. There are quite a fewholes in the plot. Why do people birthing fat-creatures not have holes in their skin to climb out through? Anyway, the purpose of the episode is to bring Donna and the Doctor back together, which it does. Also, there is a mysterious twist at the end which may return to haunt us...Anyway, 3/5 for that.
Next up is The Fires of Pompeii, which has some highly original ideas. Our heroes arrive in Pompeii at...guess when? Yep, volcano day. Yet local prophets, whose visions are strangely accurate, seem unaware of impending doom, and people are already turning to stone... However it still does have an ending which avoids Russel T. Davies' beloved bleak endings where everyone looks gloomy and you're left wondering wy you watch Doctor Who. 4/5.
Finally, planet of the Ood,at last, a perfect Doctor Who Story! Not a single flaw here! We see our tentacly friends again, now on their homeworld, in this enlightening, uplifting episode. This is an alien invasion in reverse. Instead of evil aliens dominating humans, evil humans dominate aliens. Yet the ood are changing, with 'red eye' making them calculating murderers, 'rabies' driving them into a frenzy and Ood Sigma's strange new condition. It is a true plesure to watch.
So it's a great series opener afer the awful voyage of the Damned. Coming soon will be a new sontaran invasion and...the doctor's daughter?... Dum dum duuuuum
