This was a really enjoyable film. Some fantastic action sequences, but it lacked the magic of the original Christopher Reeve movie. I know that movie was a long time ago and the special effects and budget of movies from that time can't compete with today's blockbusters, but for sheer magic and entertainment the 1978 movie still has the upper hand.
The biggest problem I have with this move is that the early years of Superman on Earth seemed somewhat glossed over, as if it was just being paid lip service because it was a necessary part of the story. Okay, I know that's all been done before in the earlier film, but if you're going to reboot a franchise (which I presume this is, hence the telling of the story as to how he got to Earth), it should have been done properly. The point of the film seemed to be to just make a huge Superman action film and slot other bits of the Superman universe around it. Nonetheless, it was still an enjoyable film, but just falls short of being a fantastic one.
One extra point to note is that this is one of the poorest quality blu-ray codings I have ever seen. The picture quality is very grainy and the sound fairly quiet, with sometimes subdued and slightly muffled dialogue. If blu-ray was a brand new technology and the studios were still finding their feet with it, I could understand. But today? Really?
