Love the new kindle.,
This review is from: Kindle Paperwhite (5th generation), 6" High Resolution Display (212 ppi) with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi (Electronics)
I received my kindle last week; I was not pleased with the delivery of the item. I can't imagine who would like a £109 item just dropped through their letterbox without any outside protection other than the kindle box itself. Infact the kindle cover came better protected that the kindle. So please be warned when ordering this item to choose better postage. This did not affect my review of the product as the postage is amazons issue and i have reviewed that separately.
My partner bought me this as a christmas present.. Due to the amount of people unhappy with the screen and the fact it took a plunge from my letterbox I was allowed my present early. Yay!
I already owned the kindle keyboard so I am comparing it to that. I haven't really looked at the newer models so I cannot make any comments on whether this item is an improvement on them.
The paperwhite is much better looking than the keyboard version. It's much faster which is most noticeable when turning the pages, the print is better and it is much easier to navigate by touch than having to use the buttons. I do have the uneven lighting at the bottom of the screen but it doesn't even reach the bottom line of text and is barely noticeable. The only time it is really obtrusive is when the lighting is at max which it never is. I have also noticed slight (very slight) uneven lighting on the screen but again compared to your average book light and lamp it's still 100 times better. Had I not been actively looking for it due to the complaints I don't think I would have even noticed, it does not affect my reading what so ever. I have seen a few pictures of bad screens on the net and some are truly bad but some I feel are just being overly critical especially as it is still better than the other light ereaders on the market.
I do miss the page turning buttons but the touch is so easy to use and I can still do it with both hands so it doesn't bother me too much but if i had a choice I would still choose page turning buttons. I ordered the ink blue case with it which is really nice and does the kindle justice.
I never used any of the other functions on the kindle keyboard such as the audio side of it so I do not miss these. As for the space issue again I see no problem with the reduced space. It still holds hundreds of books and they are stored in the cloud even if you haven't bought them from amazon but have emailed to yourself.
I'm not going to go into to too much detail as there are loads of reviews on here which will tell you the specifics. I am happy with my upgrade; I wanted an ereader to solely read books with the advantage of taking it to bed and not disturbing my partner which is exactly what I got. I didn't want any fancy extras so this device was perfect for me.
I am sure for the people who want the fancy extras won't have to wait too long until amazon upgrade this model.
