Seeing that reality TV self-parodies anyway, the venture was possibly ill-advised. Peter Kay must have watched "This is Spinal Tap" at an impressionable age and emerged, starstruck. But the formula didn't work, because reality TV takes itself less seriously to begin with, and because it is already a dreadful, dreadful thing. After waiting in vain for a real laff I realised, belatedly, that there is therefore no scope for a Stonehenge moment.
I watched the film with a group of 15 year-olds who are - for their sins - aboput to study reality TV for an exam. They were biddable enough about watching but I didn't hear many laughs from them, either. I'd trailled the film as an end-of-term treat, and felt that I'd cheated them.
