Customer Review

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Elvis was a hero to most...', 8 April 2012
This review is from: Fear Of A Black Planet (Audio CD)
The back catalogue of the politically contentious hip hop act Public Enemy shows that they burnt brightest (and best) at the beginning of their career. Their excellent studio LPs of that era, which include Yo! Bum Rush The Show and It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back prove that. This sample-heavy 1990 release can be added to that list. Why? Well, their third studio album includes some of the best tunes that they have created in the four decades they have been active. `Fight The Power' is an electrifying protest song, which matches a cut-up rhythm to a denunciation of racist white icons, and includes the potent line: "Elvis was a hero to most/But he never meant s___ to me". The exhilarating `911 Is A Joke' is a funked-up tirade led by Flavor Flav at the sluggish response times of the emergency services to calls from black districts. And the troubling `Welcome To The Terrordome' plays the unsettling sound of swirling sirens against Chuck D's self-questioning lyrics. These tracks are a winning compound of hard-hitting beats and hardcore political messages. The quality rarely fades over the other dozen or so tracks featured. Even the inter-song interludes - like the hilarious 'Incident at 66.6 FM' and the gloomy instrumental 'Final Count of the Collision Between Us and the Damned' - don't retard the intensity of Fear Of A Black Planet's sense of purpose, or the frenticism of its flow over its hour-long length.
