This story is in many ways a Victorian Gothic novel and the fact the main protagonist goes from 1945 to 1968 doesn't seem to have much relevance, often I expected the main character to travel by carriage rather than car and yet the idiom feels very modern and of today. Still it is a clever set of thoughts about vampirism and one should congratulate Marcus Sedgewick for being original. Having said that I didn't like it, but I will look out for other books by Marcus Sedgewick because it was interesting and there are a lot of books out there that aren't.
