Customer Review

on 9 July 2006
Joe Abercrombie seems to have set out to redefine the fantasy genre, and has done so so creatively and thought provokingly that I feel I wont be able to pick up another fantasy book and not compare it to The Blade Itself.

If you are new to fantasy novels or want a bit of hack and slash good-fun, then perhaps leave this one on the shelf until you yearn for something more. If you are feeling a bit disillusioned and want more from the genre, buy this book.

Its a great start to a trilogy and the characters all have murky souls, without a clear hero being defined but plenty of villains so far.

Cant wait for the next installment, but in the meantime we are stuck with the likes Gemmels more formulaic efforts.
