Excellent history of modern Europe from 1870-1970's,
This review is from: Europe Since 1870: An International History: (Paperback)
James Joll's "Europe Since 1870" is an excellent history of this period up to about the 1970's or so. Indeed, it is about the best there is apart from Felix Gilbert's famous "The End of the European Era 1890 to the Present" which is more comprehensive and extensive on the post war (WW2 that is!) period.
Other volumes that cover international history are worth reading for their European content especially Keylor's "The Twentieth Century World and Beyond" and Woodruff's "A Concise History of the Modern World." These are all excellent works to get an overview of World or modern European history in the last century although none of them really does as well as necessary on the East.
Perhaps some rising scholar might see fit to update and republish Joll's handy volume as Large has done for Gilbert's book. If not get it while you can.
