This review is from: Pfitzner: Piano Quintet/ Sextet (Audio CD)
This CD contains an outstanding interpretation of two unjustly neglected late Romantic masterpieces. In sharp contradiction to the perception of Pfitzner's works as overly conservative (a perception keenly nurtured by Pfitzner in his controversial writings), these two words are thoroughly "modern" in their continuous search for new expressive modes and in their questioning of established forms. In this context, he occasionally cites older musical styles and this has occasionally given rise to criticisms of "historicism", uneveness and backward-looking tendencies. However, this "dialogue" and critique of the past music is typical of many contemporary composers who (unlike Pfitzner) go as far as quoting actual pieces from past works.
