This review is from: Quartered Safe Out Here (Paperback)
GMF has written a book of great honesty about his part in the Burma campaign. This book is best read in conjunction with a straight history of the campaign and the Road to Mandalay by John Masters. It is both funny and evocative of a time and a philosophy that are long gone leaving the world a sadder and more foolish place. You might find some of his views unpalatable but they are always stimulating and provocative. The harsh reality of war comes through every chapter. This is not a book that glorifies war but tries to explain one young man's experiences of it and in doing so awakens our sympathy, admiration and wonder that such things were once accepted with humour and determination. Understanding of the Second World War is greatly increased through this book.
