What a disappointment!,
This review is from: Wimbledon [DVD] (2004) (DVD)
I was so looking forward to this film. I had been waiting a long time to see a Wimbledon/tennis style romance. It had the potential to be really good.
Firstly, I think the story let it down. Nothing much actually happens in the film. Peter and Lizzie meet, fall in love and play their matches in an effort to win the Wimbledon title. The fact that Lizzie's father disapproves didn't create any tension as she took no notice of what he said anyway. In the end the characters were too shallow and you didn't care about them enough, particularly Lizzie. The writers gave little attention to Peter and Lizzie's back stories and in the end you were really only rooting for Peter to win because he was a Brit!
There was absolutely zero chemistry between the two leads which was a shame. I do like Paul Bettany and could not help but be disappointed. I have even watched this film several times in the hope that it might improve.
I normally like romantic comedies - Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, Love Actually etc - but this was a real let-down. The best thing about it was that a Brit got to win Wimbledon but that's about it. Oh, and my dad, who's a keen tennis player, winced every time the tennis was shown and was clearly not impressed! Watch once to satisfy your curiosity if you like but it's not one to keep.
