This review is from: The Cambridge Companion to Machiavelli (Cambridge Companions to Literature) (Paperback)
I found this book about a year after it was published. The publishing standard is excellent as would be expected from CUP. More important, the content is also excellent. The editor is an acknowledged modern expert on Machiavelli and he has chosen the contributors well. While there is little that is completely new in the content, the level of detail is particularly well developed so that some new insights emerge for those who like me are interested in the subject matter but are not experts in Renaissance history. Ther chapter on Machiavelli in the Chancery was particularly interesting and puts MAchiavelli's work in context which someof hte biographies do not. The text was welcomely free of Italian quotations but some words were explained in the chapters. Overall, a good book that does not focus on The Prince and gives some insights on Machiavelli that are not found elsewhere.
