Impressively Detailed Guide,
This review is from: Kitzbuhel Alps Ski Guide 2013-14: Kitzbuhel, Schneewinkel, SkiWelt (Paperback)
The author is an expat Brit who lives in the area, and is gradually working his way round all the resorts covered by the Kitzbüheler all star lift pass. Its a tough life but someone has to do it.
Most guides like the excellent Where to Ski and Snowboard cover a few places in half a dozen pages each and skim over the rest in a brief paragraph, if that. This one aims to be rather more exhaustive, by concentrating on the one big area. That is a huge chunk of the Tirol, fact fans, but a week's pass only costs an extra 30 Euros or so more than the Ski Welt pass. If you are heading for one of the resorts, it's worth buying the big area pass if there is any chance at all that you might want to explore beyond the local area.
The author goes into impressive detail - maps, hotels, runs, mountain and valley restaurants, ski schools, airports, transfers and tour operators. There's more online too, which addresses the problem of things changing.
The best bit for me is where he picks his three favourite runs in each resort - red, blue and black. If I have a quibble, I would like to see more of the author's personality come out in his writing - his facts are great, but what's his opinion? What's the worst thing, what's the best? Does he love or hate oompah bands? What's it like to wear Lederhosen?
