This review is from: The Princely Courts Of Europe 1500 - 1750 (Hardcover)
I was really excited about this book because I love history and I love the period about which this book is about. I've read many books on the subject and this was the worst, for a number of reasons. Firstly, there was no depth to the text - what did not come out in the book was the sense of intrigue and drama in the courts of Europe that was so crucial to the period. Secondly, the text can hardly be described as easy-to-read. It is stuffy and elitist. Thirdly, the princely courts of europe are not put into any sort of context: In my opinion, a general framwork ought to have been established that allowed the reader to contextualise situations which are detailed in the book. The pictures are indeed good, and deserve a star - but one is not, after all, intending to buy such a book, at such a price, merely for pictures.
