The Leapfrog Musical Rainbow Tea Party is a brightly coloured, sturdy tea set which comes with two cups, a plate with six rainbow coloured pieces of cake and a singing teapot. It is aimed at pre-school children between 12 and 36 months with a view to teaching them role playing, colours, counting, manners and songs. Requiring 4 AAA batteries (included) the set is very securely (unnecessarily so in my opinion) attached to the packaging and that represents the first challenge - opening it! The teapot has a heart shaped button which, when pressed, lights up in different colours, plays songs, tells how many cups of tea are needed, how many cups are left, what colour of cake should be served and what colour the tea should be. The tea "moves" when being poured, accompanied by realistic pouring sound and there is a mirror under the lid of the teapot which fascinated my niece. The plate where the cake is stored can also be used as a matching game as there are pieces of fruit on top of the cake which are matched on segments of the plate, another learning point. While a good idea in principle, the outline on the plate is in a similar colour and is not easily distinguishable for an adult never mind a toddler. One disadvantage of this teaset is that it is strictly for pretend "dry" play as the two cups provided have little holes in them where they were attached to the packaging so are unsuitable for any type of liquid. If the child playing with the set moves on to the next stage of play tea parties where "water tea" is used, then a new teapot and tea cups will be required. Overall, the Leapfrog Musical Rainbow Tea Party has some good ideas, some of which aren't carried through to the best of their ability in my opinion. I would be concerned that the useful lifespan/attention span of the toddler may be limited hence my overall award of 3*.
