Great budget Player,
This review is from: Philips DVP5960 - Multi-Region Capable DVD Player With HDMI And Upscaling To 1080i - Black (Electronics)
For the cost of this player it is almost impossible to fault it, quality of retail dvd's is excellent using the rgb enhanced scart, the sound is clear and crisp. It works perfectly with divx encoded movie files, just burn a normal data cd and depending on the source quality you have something not far off dvd.A great advantage is subtitle support for divx, just drop your srt file on teh disc and press subtitle on the remote. The file navigation for discs and usb only suppotrs a few characters which is a minor annoyance, but the usb is good. It's a shame it only supports fat devices and not ntfs but for the price you cant ask too much. Despite what the instructions state, it will play avi files from the usb device. Also, please note that you can only use the progressive scan mode if your television supports it. Audio and video uprating are nice features too. Niggles include the remote - the buttons don't feel high quality, and as other reviews have pointed out sometimes it will take thirty seconds to identify the disc. Dont hesitate to buy it if you want good dix support.
Edit: One additional point to note is the maximum resolution, i ecountered this for the first time the other day when trying to play a divx movie. If the resolution of your divx file is higher than 720 X 480, it will not play it. YOu will ned to re-encode your file - this is not particularly hard and resources can be found on the internet. Its lack of ability to downscale is annoying.
