An engaging, literate and thought-provoking read. Thoroughly recommended!,
This review is from: One Big Damn Puzzler (Paperback)
I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book as much as I did "One Big Damn Puzzler". I came across it by chance (I am an expat bookworm and read everything that comes through my local library) and was hooked from the start. It manages to combine being highly amusing, deeply thought-provoking and beautifully written; not an easy feat (in fact I am reminded of Evelyn Waugh in this respect).
It is simultaneously a damned good *read* (easy just to be swept along by the story and the colourful and imaginative details thereof), an exploration of what it means to be happy and to be *human* and how different cultures approach the same, an interesting take on our materialism, and a network of sly Shakespearian references, which are refreshingly free of clunking neon "pointers" - if you get them, you grin; if you don't, you won't realise you've missed anything.
I have been excitedly recommending this wonderful book to all of my book-loving friends, and am very much looking forward to discovering more of the oeuvre of this marvellous author.
