I am so disappointed in this book. I am a keen and experienced knitter, but found this collection to be totally uninspiring. It is basically a collection of old patterns and poor quality black and white photographs that have been photocopied and gathered together under the guise of being 'traditional' - very much the kind of patterns that appeared in various knitting magazines when my mum was knitting in the 1950s and 1960s. Such a shame no one has tried to update these patterns, or at least take the trouble to knit and rephotograph them - but frankly, the garments are so universally hideous that even the glossiest of photographs would not redeem this book. There is a reasonable selection of traditional instructions for different cable designs, but these do not relate to the actual garment patterns at all - nice as samplers perhaps or for practice ... but the mathematics involved in actually translating these samples to a garment are certainly beyond me ... so all in all, perhaps interesting to students of knitwear as a reference book, showing how dull knitting patterns used to be in the 1950s and 1960s ... but for anyone looking for stylish and innovative aran knitwear patterns, a total waste of money. And incidentally - as a book that is essentially cobbled together from old patterns .. very expensive!
