Mei Ye Foo provides a colour-coded journey plan as one way of discovering new connections between the movements on this recording. The thirty-one tracks she likens to a labyrinth, drawing comparisons between the listener and child playing with its toys.
This might seem an original and innovative approach in interacting with a classical music CD, and indeed the label - Odradek - is committed to presenting recordings in a new way. A not-for-profit organisation, big names and marketing are of less importance to them than the music itself.
Their idea seems to be reaping dividends, as Mei Ye Foo has already won Best Newcomer at the BBC Magazine Awards for this exceptional recording of Unsuk Chin, Gubaidulina and Ligeti.
Mei Ye Foo finds curiosity and the joy of discovery in these fragments, and throughout they are pervaded by a playfulness and sense of humour.
One of the Records of 2013 so far.
