One of the best books I've read this year,
This review is from: The Crimson Petal and the White (Kindle Edition)
The Crimson Petal and the White is a brilliant read. It is probably the best novel I have read this year. The narrative is beautifully written and well constructed, the language is ornate and glorious, the characters are wholly three dimensional and realistic.
The story is hefty with over 800 pages to get through, but Victorian London comes alive for the reader. What a time to have lived in. Class politics, fashions, the city's underbelly and societal struggles rear their heads with a clarity and accuracy rarely found in fiction. As well as the reader experiencing a feeling of voyeurism at Sugar's trials and tribulations, a well-researched history lesson is weaved into the prose meaning that you're educated along with being fascinated.
Although some of the narrative is very close to the bone (it is about prostitution after all), Faber does not shy away from his subject matter, which is definitely to the benefit of the characters and their environments. A book well worth getting stuck into.
