Brilliant and Underrated!,
This review is from: Revenge - Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Revenge is an absolutely brilliant tv show that has undeservedly flown under the radar of most of the population. Ridiculously addictive, this show incorporates action, beautiful settings and plot twists aplenty with complex characters and an insight into the (exaggeratedly corrupt and immoral) lives of The Hamptons elite. This show is more trashy than intelligent, but despite that it's quality far outweighs other YA tv shows being much darker in tone and with a clear driving story - that of a girl after revenge.
Our main character is Emily Thorne, a girl who has just bought a large house in The Hamptons making her next door neighbours to the famous and wealthy Grayson family. Emily is a girl with a secret, and a dark past. Her real name is Amanda Clarke, and she is the daughter of David Clarke, a man who once worked for the Grayson's but was convicted of laundering money to terrorists who brought down a plane when Amanda was still a little girl. Amanda's father was sent to prison where he was then murdered. Amanda, along with almost everyone else, believed her father guilty of this awful crime, until she started reading his journals and discovered he was innocent and had been set up all along by the actual people guilty of the crime - the family he worked for and trusted - the Graysons. So starts Amanda's revenge - she finds a new identity, moves in next door to the Grayson's then begins to secretly take down those who destroyed her and her father's life, all the while fighting to gain their trust. Sound exciting? That's because it is!
There's a lot of great stuff to be mentioned about this show. The premise, while seeming quite trashy, actually works incredibly well. It's nice to have a driving plot in tv shows these days, many series just seem content with introducing a group of characters and then letting their ups and downs provide the entertainment. Revenge however has a clear focus and that means there is never a boring episode - you are constantly discovering something new, or on the edge of your seat, willing the plans that Emily has set in motion to go right. The characters in this show are another huge asset. They bring a beating heart to this show - they are complex, 3D, and they develop through the 22 episodes, growing and changing before your eyes. You will change your opinion on a lot of these characters as the show progresses - those you thought were the villains turn out to have a lot more to them than initially meets the eye. Those you dismiss as not interesting will show you new sides to their personality that makes you care about them. Whilst those you are rooting for & willing to do well begin to disappoint and become exactly what they promised they wouldn't. Finally - the beautiful setting of the Hamptons and choice of makeup, hair and wardrobe for the characters cannot go unmentioned. The Grayson's house is absolutely stunning, the decorations for their parties detailed and beautiful. The dresses and jewellery are to die for - visually this show is spectacular to see.
I would now normally mention some negatives about the item I'm reviewing, but for once I don't actually have any. The season finale was shocking, unexpected, unpredictable, and I cannot wait to start the next season. I only hope it can live up to the very high quality of this one.
