What a refreshing album!,
This review is from: The Spirit Room [Int'L-Not Enh.] (Audio CD)
I had heard the song Everywhere from time to time and always loved it but had no idea who sang it until I discovered on this website that it was Michelle Branch so I immediately ordered The Spirit Room and am so glad that I did! It's an extremely good album brimming with shimmering, melodic songs that get under your skin straightaway. It's rare that an album is filled with one great song after another, and no fillers, but this album is packed with great songs. Although at times she does sound strikingly like Avril Lavigne (which is not a bad thing as I like her music too!), the majority of the time her wonderful vocals make her stand out from many of her peers. Not only does she possess a wonderful voice, but she is also a great guitarist and songwriter. In that respect, she probably most reminds me of Vanessa Carlton who is also a wonderful singer and songwriter, although her instrument is the piano. Five of the best tracks on here, All You Wanted, Sweet Misery, If Only She Knew, I'd Rather Be In Love, and Goodbye to You, were all written solely by Michelle Branch, and the other songs are collaborations. Goodbye To You is a heartbreaking song and moved me to tears. Another standout track is You Set Me Free which has the line "I wanted to fly so you gave me your wings, and time held its breath so I could sing" .. lovely! Any one of the songs on this album could have been released as a single, which is not something that can be said very often. I'm so thrilled with this album that I'm now going to buy her other album, Hotel Paper. I cannot recommend The Spirit Room highly enough and it deserves more than 5 stars!
