This review is from: Final Fantasy VIII (PS) (Video Game)
Where to start... this is without question the most complex game I've ever encountered... there's more levels to this thing than the Canary Wharf tower...
The other thing is this game is HUGE... four disks worth of what, in my case, stretched out to over 100 hours total play. The characters are generally likable, the plot twists like a mountain road and there's a lot to get you going... BUT... there's something about this game that is intrinsically unlikable... its all a little too flash, too serious, too polished, to the point where it feels more or less soulless...
Final Fantasy VII was a simpler game with simpler graphics, simpler story and whathaveyou, but it made you feel emotions that were simply lacking from this. Even some of the sprite-based games like Breath of Fire 3 or Grandia have more to offer in an empathic way. You felt you were actually in any of these games, rather than being what is, in effect, like a camera crew for Squall and party... I always felt detatched from this game, and know for a fact that I won't play it to completion again because I gained little from the experience (and I simply don't have that kind of time on my hands).
Sure, the game's good, and doubtlessly it will appeal to a great many people, particulaly those who like thier graphics, the more hardcore RPG players (by which I mean those who play the games for the story rather than the slick presentation) may feel in the end like I did, a little disappointed with the whole experience...
