This review is from: Spitfire Ace of Aces: The Wartime Story of Johnnie Johnson (Hardcover)
'Johnnie' Johnson's own autobiography 'Wing Leader' is a well written account of his career as the UK's most successful fighter pilot, but this later collaboration with Dilip Sarkar takes the story to a new level.
Earlier in his writing career, Dilip Sarkar had an irritating habit of punctuating his texts with constant references to his previous works in a style that smacked of self-promotion and which detracted from the story being told. This is entirely absent from this book and Dilip’s undoubted talents both as a researcher and factual writer, combined with his efforts to contact wartime pilots and secure their stories for future generations make this book essential reading.
With his accumulated research covering the careers of Douglas Bader, the origins of the 12 Group ‘Big Wing’ strategy and much more, Dilip Sarkar has been able to greatly enlarge upon Johnson’s story, putting it into a wider context; pulling in contemporary accounts and enriching it with a large number of photographs. It’s hard to fault and whilst I would always recommend Wing Leader as the Great Man’s own account, this is an essential accompaniment.
