Speaking as a northerner - a Yorkshireman to be precise, I was looking forward to reading this book once I'd heard of it. Stuart (can I call him Stu? Most of my friends call me that) does the usual 'tour'-y bit, looking at different places all the stuff that goes with them. What he gets right, and sometimes above other travel writers (for this is a travel book), is that he exposing their microcharacters very well. Granted he's got good experience of 'the north' but there are some wicked anecdotes and marvellous moments in the book. I was particularly looking forward to his comments on Yorkshire, him speaking as a Lancastrian, and I wasn't let down!
Cracking read - one not to miss.
