I read this book a while ago and I plan to read it again because I'm still thinking about the characters even after several months. It had a strange and subtly mesmerising quality that hooked me gradually; like a slowly turning vice I barely noticed until I was firmly in its grip. Then, as the sense of foreboding grew I experienced a surprisingly real sense of falling, or sinking, a presentiment perhaps, at which point I let go and became immersed, swept along by the novel's unexpectedly relentless power to draw me in. Highly recommended.
