As a Chinese woman myself, i was very shocked by the stories. these stories seem to be exaggerated to a large extent. No doubt, Xinran is a good writer, however, whether the stories are representative in modern China are quite doubtful. She tried to sell the dark side of China to catch western people’s attention. (good sales lady!) In my own understanding, Chinese women today have as much right as their men, if not more aggressive. They are also very open and materialistic. It is culture that makes one nation different from others—we cannot understand the real culture without experience ourselves rather than reading someone’s biased view and subjective stories. I believe, many 'real' Chinese women will agree with me.
